First and foremost, this is a beautiful piece that I am absolutely, absolutely stoked to own.
The fit is wonderful, not too suffocating or baggy. The embroidery is stunning, with incredible detail, texture, and weight. It hangs at a beautiful length that goes well with both my leggings and skirts. And, despite its thin construction, it feels durable and long wearing. It is everything I have asked for. But seeing some of the folks below, I can see why some people may be frustrated with what they receive.
So onwards with the quirks. Particularly the quirks of this piece being 100% linen.
This piece is unlined. I brought this piece knowing this - and in my experience, most darker linen pieces are unlined because linen clothes is often made for its light, airy nature and lining linen garments would defeat that purpose.
This, however, does mean that the embroidery's "back" is exposed. It is very well sewn onto the fabric and I have no fear of the embroidery falling off, but there are some loose threads and the texture of the exposed embroidery is rough and somewhat scratchy. And the embroidery is everywhere, including the sleeves.
Because I am wearing this as a summer overcoat on top of at least one (mesh) layer, I don't have any sensory issues, but I can imagine it may feel a little unpleasant to some who wear it directly on their skin.
In addition, because this is linen, the embroidery parts are much stiffer than the linen, giving the fresh-out-of-the-bag a sort of "panel look" that will likely soften up over time.
Secondly, linen doesn't stretch, but I recommend to be mindful of the sizing chart. I typically wear a large, but after checking the chart, I ended up going with a small. This gave the jacket a much more fitted look (especially the sleeves!) which I was going for. I am not at all uncomfortable, but if I ordered just based off my "standard size", I may have found this piece far too baggy. Which might be what some folks want!
Linen doesn't fold or drape like cotton. It is much stiffer and also "papery", so trying to get its folds to lay where you want to can be a bit of a process that often requires a bit of ironing. And like all linen pieces, it wrinkles like a monster, though it's not very noticeable because it's dark.
The cardigan only comes with one button and has built in belt loops (and pockets!) which is buttoned/gathered a little above my waist, right below my ribs. I don't intend to ever belt/button this piece very often, so I'm fine with this, but it does give the piece a very low neckline. Your mileage may vary on whether you like this look or not. The belt is double-sided, with one side being black and the other a pomegranate red, and is very sturdy. It can be tied with the belt without the belt loops, but I found it to slide on the embroidery if you go up, though it's pretty solid if tied at my hips/navel. Taking off the belt doesn't really ruin the look because the belt loops are quite tight to the piece.
Finally, the hood is pretty much insubstantial and light. I don't ever intend to wear it as a hood, especially since I like how it cuts up the solid black on top as a sort of mock caplet, but I personally think it is much better for show than to actually be a hood. Again, your mileage may vary.
And now for the price: $250 is a pretty penny. I personally think it's priced fair for a very gorgeous garnment of a completely unique style that I find myself wearing almost daily because I think it makes look fabulous.
But this is a beautiful, unlined, high quality linen cardigan that comes with all the beauty - and the quirks - of being an unlined linen cardigan. So to prospective buyers, buy this keeping that in mind.
Happy shopping!
I wish I could say I love it in spite of the flaws like other reviews here but the truth is, the thinness of the material with the lack of lining makes it almost unwearable. The texture of the designs are felt underneath and it is a scratchy, sensory nightmare that contrasts the thin linen fabric. Not to mention the hood causes the top opening to fold over which obscures the bird designs more dramatically than what is shown in the last picture and makes it uncomfortable to wear that way as well. It's a shame that I took this risk, only to have something I can't wear, since all international sales are final. The only stars I can give it is for the design, it is honestly an incredibly beautiful piece of art. But for the amount of money, the quality is ultimately not there unfortunately. I hope that in time, I might purchase another item here and hopefully have better luck with it, but for now I am unfortunately disappointed.
I love this coat (I think of it as a coat because it's so long) and have gotten tons of compliments on it! Since it's worn over layers, the lack of lining doesn't bug me.
I really love this cardigan. It is beautiful and so fun. However, considering the price and craftsmanship otherwise put into it, I was genuinely surprised to see that there was no lining or way to protect/hide the back side of the embroidery. The lack makes it feel unfinished, in a way. I’m a little wary of wearing it casually, for fear that I’ll end up catching some of the threads on the buttons of my shirt or pants and somehow ruining the whole thing. It’s a piece of art that I’m proud to have in my wardrobe, but I really wish there was a lining and hope future pieces will take that into consideration. :)
I love this piece!! The colors on mine feel bright and vibrant, the material is comfortable, and I cannot wait to take it out for a spin come fall!
I want to be clear that I like it a LOT and have no regrets, but I do have a few small critiques I wanna give. For one, there are a good number of loose threads here and there I'm gonna have to cut back on my own. Normally, I wouldn't care, but this was $250 and it did throw off my budget for this paycheck, so it would be a small quality of life upgrade if I didn't have to worry about that.
Second, and this may be just a me thing, but I don't like where the belt sits on it? It'd feel more comfortable, to me at least, if the belt looped around just above where my hips are, but it wants to sit just below my ribcage, which I don't like as much. I do have kind of a long torso, so maybe it's my own fault, who knows.
I'm a 5'9" man and I'm fairly slim. Usually I fit in a men's medium to even a men's small, but I got a large since I know the measurements tend to lean towards the smaller side, which was DEFINITELY the right call, it fits me quite well (short of the belt placement, but again, might be my own sensory issues).
Thank you so much for your review! :)
Im so sorry about the threads - youre completely right that it shouldnt be an issue! We're currently working on exapnding the team to include an in-house quality manager, so we can deal with small details like that before clothing is sent out.
As for the belt - i tend to design my clothes to have ties/belts at the waist rather than the hips. I think it just comes down to personal prefence! You can probably still wear the belt at the hips without the loops, though. Thanks again for the nice review!!
